Introduction
These pages have been designed to help you make the most of the library and information resources available to you across NoWAL - the North West Academic Libraries consortium. They include links to information on accessibility as well as maps and directions. If you need more detail about access, car parking or services, please contact the Library concerned in advance of your visit.
NoWAL prides itself on providing extensive access and borrowing services to users of its member libraries. The services detailed on these pages have been designed to exceed those of national schemes currently in operation. If you have any comments, or would like to suggest further improvements, please contact the NoWAL Office.
Where do I start?
Your home library should always be your starting point. You should already have received information about the library of your own institution. Staff in your library liaise closely with academic colleagues to purchase stock to support courses taught locally, and the stock and electronic resources of your library should satisfy most of your information needs. The libraries in NoWAL have agreed reciprocal access for staff and students for wider reading.
How do I get into NoWAL libraries?
All staff and students of libraries within NoWAL have the right to gain access to all NoWAL libraries for reference purposes (with the exception of the Eddie Davies Library in the Manchester Business School). However, borrowing is restricted to certain groups. You gain access to a library for reference use by presenting your university/library ID card. Users wishing to register for borrowing rights will need to present their SCONUL Access card in addition to their university/library ID card. Some NoWAL libraries may require up to 48 hours to process your application and may require you to provide a photograph. Please check before you travel.
The NoWAL libraries also provide access for carers and personal assistants accompanying disabled users. In the Manchester area libraries, an Access Summit card is the accepted form of identification. Other member libraries have their own local procedures for admitting carers - you are recommended to phone for details before you travel.
What do I need to do in order to use NoWAL libraries effectively?
It is always wise to make a note of the classmark from the catalogue of the library you are searching in, as sometimes the particular item you are looking for may have different class numbers in the various libraries. Access to the individual catalogues of each of the NoWAL libraries is available here. If you need assistance in retrieving material from the shelves, please try to contact the library in advance of your visit.
