A collection of usually historical material which provides a research resource for scholars. The material usually consists of documents, which can be manuscript , printed or in audio-visual format, but can contain objects, e.g. musical instruments.
Audio-visual
Referring to material which can be listened to or watched, as opposed to read, e.g. CDs, DVDs, videos. Often abbreviated to AV
Autograph
A manuscript of a piece written in the composer’s handwriting, or any another document in its author’s handwriting, e.g. a letter
Authority
A standardised way of presenting types of information in a database in order to facilitate searching: e.g. maintaining consistency in the spelling of a composer’s name or the title of a piece

1) a list of resources giving information on a given subject

In an online catalogue, a list of words from which you may choose keywords for further searching
Catalogue
Any means of accessing the holdings of e.g. a library, whether printed or online, which has been constructed according to specific criteria
Class(ification) number
The number assigned to an item to tell you where it is on the shelves. Music for similar combinations of instruments or books on the same subject will have the same class number
Complete edition
A multi-volume publication of all the surviving music by a single composer, prepared to the highest standards of scholarship. Complete editions are published over decades and many are still not complete
Conducting score
A full score large enough to conduct from. Often a quarto score or folio score
Counter
The main library desk where items are issued and returned
Cutter
The three letter code after a class number. It represents the first three letters of the composer’s or author’s name, or the first three letters of the composer’s
name in books about a single composer or their music, or the first three letters of the title where there is no overall author
Denkmal
German for monument
Digitisation
The process whereby documents, images or sound files can be viewed or listened to via a website
Due date
The date stamped in an item you borrow to tell you when it is to be returned by
E-book
A book which has been subject to digitisation to make it readable online, as opposed to being in hard copy
E-journal
Either a digitised version of a hard copy journal, or one which is published solely in an online form
E-learning
E teaching and learning process which incorporates electronic resources. Can also indicate learning about electronic resources
E-resource
A computer based source of information. These include electronic versions of newspaper and journal articles, databases, books and other documents and publications
Edition
A work as published by a given publisher. There are thus often several editions of the same work, each issued by a different publisher. A single publisher might also bring out revised editions of a work which they have previously published
