Dublin Core
A metadata element set it is widely used to describe digital materials such as video, sound, image, text, and composite media like web pages
Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
A metadata schema used to describe archival collections and compatible with XML
E Ink
Display technology designed to mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Commonly used in mobile devices such as e-readers, E Ink technology allows the reader to read text and view images without glare from the sun or other bright lights
EPUB - Electronic Publication
A free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). EPUB is enables text display to be optimized for the particular display device.

The ‘data about data’, of any sort in any media. Metadata can be text, voice, or image that describes what the audience wants or needs to search or see.
Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS)
A metadata schema for describing library materials. A simplified version of the MARC standard, formatted using XML.
Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)
A standard used for sharing metadata records. Formatted using XML.

Subcontracting the process of digitisation to a third-party company.
Portable Document Format (PDF)
An Adobe Systems file format for document exchange. PDF is used for representing two-dimensional documents such as journal articles and book chapters
Preservation
Maintaining or restoring access to artifacts, documents and records through the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of decay and damage.
Scan Area
The maximum dimensions of the area on a scanner in which an item can be placed in order to be digitised.
Scanner
A piece of equipment which supplies a digital image of the item which is placed in it.
Secure Electronic Delivery (SED)
British Library service supplying electronic documents direct to the requesters via email.
Tagged Image File Format (TIFF)
A file format for storing images, including photographs. TIFF format is widely supported by image-manipulation applications, by publishing and page layout applications, by scanning, faxing, word processing, optical character recognition and other applications.
