Before contacting the copyright owner directly to obtain permission it may be useful to consider the following:
- Check whether the copyright has already expired, if it has then copyright clearance will not be required.
- Is the scanning or photocopying of the work already covered by one of the licensing schemes your institution is signed up to
- Identify the owner of the copyright; the owner may not necessarily be the author or the publisher
- Seek permission from the owner of the copyright material. Outline which piece of work you would like to use, why you would like to use it and how the material will be used.
- Obtain all copyright clearances in writing, either electronic or physical. Keep permissions in a secure and accessible place.
