Copying for Teaching Purposes

Copying for teaching purposes is not protected by fair dealing as it assumes that students on a particular course will copy the same material and therefore be producing multiple copies.

The CLA Basic Licence permits Higher Education Institutions to make multiple photocopies and scan extracts from printed books, journals and magazines.

Some publishers and works are not covered by the Basic CLA Licence. You should consult the following lists to ensure you are copying from a permitted source:

CLA Excluded Categories and Excluded Works
Excluded Works from the HE Licence
International territories

Where CLA licences include scanning rights they currently only permit the scanning of works originally published in the UK and US, except where the US publisher has specifically excluded them.

The CLA Comprehensive Licence allows the copying and re-use of digital material such as electronic or online publications. The digital rights of this licence allow the licensee to re-use or make copies of extracts from born digital titles. Rights are granted by publishers on an ‘opt-in’ basis. Consult the lists below to view the publishers who have included their digital titles in this licence.

If a publisher is not covered by the CLA licence permission should be sought directly from the rights holder.
