 Put together a smaller programme for 2009-10 in the first instance. One leaflet covering the period of October 2009 – June 2010 will be produced and will include both General Programme and Management Theme courses. Leaflet sent out 5 October 2009. No courses have were cancelled in 2009-10 and a number of additional events were added to the programme. Overall bookings were up on the previous year.

 A course took place in June 2010 in partnership with the University of Huddersfield. This was a success and it is hoped to run similar events in future.

Completed. It is recognised that a reduction in demand meant that this programme should be discontinued. It is proposed to re-purpose some of the content from the TLS module  into shorter courses within the General Programme.

Develop a NoWAL Work Experience Scheme with the aim of providing an introduction to working in the library and information service for graduates with a keen interest in undertaking a post-graduate

The graduation ceremony took place on the 30 November 2009 at the University of Salford.
Conduct a CLIP survey amongst staff who have completed at least one unit since the programme began. The results will be used to evaluate the longer-term impact of the CLIP programme on individuals’ roles, job satisfaction and career development. Feedback will also be used to improve the programme. Digitisation
This project delivered a number of services based around digitisation processes to NoWAL institutions. The services fell into three categories:
  • Joint procurement of a high quality digital reproduction service
  • Shared training and development
  • Knowledge exchange and networking services

  • Posters created to promote and advertise digitisation services of NoWAL institutions

Phase two
February to April 2010:

  • NoWAL institutions surveyed about mobile technologies they are investigating or using. Completed April 2010
  • Information and communications students about the use of learning objects in relation to learning and learning. Completed April 2010
  • Final report completed April 2010
  • Post project recommmendations agreed by Sterring Group.
  • Final report presented to and accepted by NoWAL Board on 21 May 2010.
Final Report Recommendations
  • Training delivered to key contacts, focusing on blog posting and means of facilitating current awareness.

Cross-Search Utility
Convene a working party to examine the implications of a consortial implementation of a search platform product. The group will consider both existing search platforms and the possibility of developing a wholly new product.

Demonstrations took place in May 2010. A table which compares the main features of the three products demonstrated to NoWAL members is available here.

Completed high level outline specification was accepted by Board in May 2010.

Possibility of consortial procurement will be revisited in 2011.

Workforce Development
This project will research the skills which current NoWAL Senior Managers look for in professional library and information workers and then compare/contrast this to the skills which recent entrants to the profession possess and the ones they rate as important. The final report will include proposals to address any identified differences between the two groups with particular emphasis as to how NoWAL and the North West undergraduate and postgraduate library and information course providers can address the gaps.

The Digitisation Project Manager has set up a blog to enable NoWAL members to keep to up to date with the project and provide a platform for individuals to make comments and provide some feedback on what's happening.

Review the MLA Access for All Toolkits over the summer and discuss any changes at the next meeting of the Diversity Group.

There are no significant changes to report with regard to the toolkits. The Diversty Group have agreed to investigate other methods of collecting this or similar information which has more relevance to the academic library sector. Resources to investigate include the performance management and benchmarking consortium, and work done by the White Rose Consortium. Alternatively, the Group may investigate the possibility of devising their own toolkit.
